From this paper, it is obvious that Cameroon has huge energy potentials. There are proven deposits of crude oil, large rivers, biomass and solar energy that have not been fully utilized. Energy production from hydropower has been the main focus of the governments for many years.
With a total installed capacity of 1,292 MW, the mix of energy production of Cameroon consists of 57% of hydraulic power source, 21% of thermal springs in the gas, 10% of heat source to light fuel oil and 13% of heat source to heavy fuel oil. The oil sector is managed by the national oil company Société Nationale des Hydrocarbures .
Most services in Cameroon depend on the availability of electrical energy. The scarcity of energy therefore inhibits economic, environmental and social progress of a society. The lack or limited supply of electricity means schools, hospitals, industrial companies, and other state institutions/agencies will not operate optimally .
Hydropower is the major source of power generation in Cameroon . Cameroon has the second largest hydropower potential in sub-Saharan Africa (294 TWh) , after the Democratic Republic of Congo, with an estimated total theoretical potential of 23 GW and a production potential of 103 TWh/year .
The wind energy potential of Cameroon is not as vast as solar and very low consideration has been devoted to it so far. Most studies on wind energy potential such as , , , , are concentrated in the northern regions of the country where the potential is fairly high.
There is good solar potential in Cameroon (see Fig. 5) but it is not well developed. The major cause of the poor state of solar energy development is the poor commitment and dedication of government in taking important steps to boost the sector. In most part of the country, the mean solar irradiance is approximately 5.8 kWh/m 2 /day .
