The facilities, which have been in service for several months, serve the northern part of Cameroon. Large-scale solar energy production is now a reality in Cameroon. On Friday 22 September 2023, Cameroon’s Minister of Water and Energy Gaston Eloundou Essomba inaugurated two photovoltaic solar power plants in the Far North and North regions.
Photovoltaic power generation has become an important pillar of the energy development strategies of all countries. Cameroon is committed to attaining 25% of energy production from renewable energy sources, with solar energy contributing up to 6% of total energy production in the country by 2035 (Power Africa, 2019).
During our sojourn in Cameroon to implement the Esaghem project, we found no large-scale private business in solar energy components. Only one corporation, ENEO Cameroon, a parastatal, is responsible for the generation and distribution of electricity in the whole country.
The government, through the national utility Energy of Cameroon (ENEO) and the Electricity Development Corporation (EDC), is equally involved in the development of solar PV power stations, which supplies additional electricity to localities that are not connected to the national grid network (MINEE, 2014).
Solar energy potential The potential of solar energy in Cameroon is high with an average estimated solar irradiance of 5.8 kWh/day/m 2 in the Northern parts of the country (42% diffused ) and 4.9 kWh/day/m 2 for the rest of the country , .
With respect to sources of origin, 71.8% of energy consumption in 2014 came from biomass (Fig. 2 c). Hydropower dominate electricity generation in Cameroon with 69%, followed by self-production 22%, with an installed capacity of 1558 MW in 2009 .
