Albania''s latest solar tender aims to construct 300 MW of solar parks, as the country strives to become a net exporter of renewable energy by 2030. Supported by Swiss and European institutions, successful candidates will receive 15-year contracts for their plants'' output.
The pilot project of the Banja floating solar plant started implementation in 2020 and was completed early 2023. The solar plant comprises four floating units of 0.5 MWp each, with a total installed capacity of 2 MWp. The floating units are anchored on the Banja reservoir, near the dam of the Banja hydropower plant.
Unlike previous tenders, the awardees are required to secure land rights independently, as the Albanian Government did not allocate state assets for this purpose. Previously, Albania held three solar PV auctions: a 100MW auction in Arkeni in 2018 and two auctions in Karavasta (140MW) and Spitalla in 2020.
This is the second photovoltaic (PV) tender launched by Albania in less than a year. Voltalia won all the capacity involved in the tender. In May 2020, Voltalia had already announced that it had won a 30-year concession contract to develop, construct and operate Karavasta''s 140 MW solar project.
Tirana, Albania, situated at a latitude and longitude of 41.3253 and 19.8184 respectively, is a favorable location for solar photovoltaic (PV) installations due to its varying seasonal average daily solar irradiance per kilowatt of installed capacity the summer season, it''s as high as 7.85 kWh/day while in autumn it averages at 3.70 kWh/day. Winter sees a dip with an average of
The solar park will consist of 4 floating units of 0.5 MW each, with a total investment cost of EUR 2.3 million. The contract is the first major commercial contract for Ocean Sun''s floating solar technology and the project will demonstrate the viability of the technology developed based on competence from Norwegian solar PV and maritime industry.

About 99.5% of energy in Albania is produced by hydropower plants (in summer there is not such rainfall). Many small power plants can not operate during the summer months, as water is needed for agriculture. The energy demand of the tourism industry focuses mainly on the period June -October. In these 5 months are about 80% of the accommodation about ¾ of annual energy
In the frame of the Devoll Hydropower Project in Albania, Statkraft is developing an innovative solar floating project in the Banja reservoir. Statkraft is open and is continuing to investigate for potential opportunities to expand its investments in hydropower and solar power in Albania and in the South East Europe.
Albania needs solar, wind power to balance hydroelectric production. Balluku said the tender is aimed at contributing to the country''s aspiration to become a net exporter of electricity by 2030. It requires solar energy, as well as wind power, to balance domestic production. Namely, Albania still relies almost 100% on hydropower.
Albania-based electrical energy investor AGA-SOLAR has actually made an application for a building permit for a solar park in Darzezë e Re village, near the southwestern city of Fier, the energy ministry claimed. The solar park will certainly have an installed ability of as much as 150 MW, the ministry stated in a notice earlier today.

The project was promoted for its demonstration effect and the aim is to easily replicate it on other reservoirs in Albania and the wider region. The combination with a hydropower plant is also significant. The Vau i Dejës facility already includes a solar power plant on a dam. More renewable energy projects are under consideration in the area.
Our client owns and operates a portfolio of renewable energy assets in Albania. As part of its hedging strategy, the client wants to sell the power production from a solar farm in Albania via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The electricity supply under the PPA may start in Q4 2023.
The Global Solar Atlas provides a summary of solar power potential and solar resources globally. It is provided by the World Bank Group as a free service to governments, developers and the general public, and allows users to quickly obtain data and carry out a simple electricity output calculation for any location covered by the solar resource database.
Voltalia has started doing business in Albania in 2018 with the unsuccessful participation in the first solar tender organized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy of the Republic of Albania ("MIE"). Despite this result, Voltalia has demonstrate great interest in the construction of 2.5 MW FiT-solar PV projects.
The Albanian government has given the green light to two projects put forward by local companies and envisaging the construction of solar photovoltaic (PV) parks with a combined capacity exceeding 100 MW. US raises tariffs on solar wafers, polysilicon from China. 5 days ago. Albania awards construction permits to 108 MW of solar projects
Still, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy awarded 283.9 MW. The lowest offer came in at EUR 39.7 per MWh, against a starting level of EUR 59.97 per MWh. Eight consortiums won 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) today in Albania for their solar power projects as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy opened their bids.
A move toward more solar is partly an attempt to diversify Albania’s electricity sources. In “ Evaluation and integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems in Albanian energy landscape,” which was recently published in Solar Compass, the scientists said that solar is an adaptable and affordable alternative, given Albania’s sunny climate.
Smart Gynesh Energy, Smart Energy Group and Erseka Solar were selected for two lots: 40.3 MW at EUR 53.53 per MWh and 20.2 MW at EUR 56.28 per MWh. JGA consulting, Swiss Approval Albania, Eterna and Gr Albania secured 15.2 MW at a price of EUR 54.7 per MWh. Solar PV, Gr Albania, Enterprise Albania and RAB won 29.13 MW at EUR 54.8 per MWh.
Albanian researchers say that solar could be key to reducing Albania’s reliance on energy imports, but the nation will need to invest in grid infrastructure, streamline laws, and enhance access to funding to support deployment.
About 20% of Albania GDP relies on agriculture that employs about 60% of the population (as of 2020). Hence, agrisolar (and agrivoltaic) projects are among the most effective solution for a growing rural economy.
